Latest NewsChamber Members Take Leading Role in Advising Measure Z Spending
The Budget Engagement Commission will work to build reserves and fund programs
The Riverside City Council recently announced the members of the Budget Engagement Commission, which will advise the City Council on how the City’s sales tax revenue should be spent. The Chamber was a strong advocate for the Commission and ensured that local businesses were well-represented in its make-up. Furthermore, the establishment of the Commission is a crucial step in the City’s efforts to promote transparency and provide funding for City projects.
Chamber members Robert Mendez, of RLM Wealth Group, and Collette Lee, of Windermere Tower Properties, were selected as the Chair and Vice Chair of the Commission, respectively.
Over recent months, the Chamber has taken an active role in encouraging members to apply to the Commission to ensure that the voices of the business community are heard. By selecting members who represent a broad spectrum of interests, the Commission will be well-suited to make budgetary recommendations to the City Council that benefit the community and local businesses.
During the November 2016 General Election, the Chamber advocated strongly for the passage of Measure Z, which could potentially be used to pay down debts, build up reserves, and fund projects such as the Main Library, police and fire services, road repair, beautification, and technological upgrades. The establishment of a Chamber-supported Budget Engagement Commission will help determine how the estimated $48 million in additional annual revenue from Measure Z will be spent.
The Chamber has been a strong proponent in the establishment of the Commission and looks forward to its success in supporting the community and building a stronger local economy. The Budget Engagement Commission will meet on a quarterly basis, and will hold additional special and joint meetings with the City Council.
